Σταδιακή αύξηση παρατηρείται στα περιστατικά μόλυνσης από τον ιό του Δυτικού Νείλου με τα περισσότερα κρούσματα να εντοπίζονται στην ανατολική Αττική και τη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Όπως αναφέρεται σε ρεπορτάζ της Καθημερινής, στις τρεις περιπτώσεις οι ασθενείς εμφάνισαν συμπτώματα από το κεντρικό νευρικό σύστημα (εγκεφαλίτιδα), ενώ στις υπόλοιπες τα συμπτώματα ήταν ήπια.

Το αργότερο μέχρι την ερχόμενη εβδομάδα αναμένεται να ξεκινήσει ο μοριακός έλεγχος για τον ιό του Δυτικού Νείλου, στο αίμα που προέρχεται από αιμοδότες ή επισκέπτες περιοχών που πλήττονται και οι οποίες αυτή τη στιγμή έχουν αποκλειστεί από την αιμοδοσία για λόγους ασφαλείας.

Την άμεση έναρξη μοριακού ελέγχου, ώστε να μην παρατηρηθούν ελλείψεις σε αίμα, ζήτησε με επιστολή στο υπουργείο Υγείας η Ελληνική Ομοσπονδία Θαλασσαιμίας.
